8 Good New Year’s Resolutions for Moms

8 Good New Year’s Resolutions for Moms

Are you a mother? If so, making a New Year’s resolution may literally be the last thing on your mind. Even still, you should make one. New Year’s resolutions do not have to be big life-changing events, like losing weight or getting out of debt. They can still be small and meaningful, like:

1 – Spend More Time with Your Children

If you work outside of the home or have children who are active in sports or other extracurricular activities, it can be difficult to get quality time with your children. If pressed for time, start in small steps. Sneak in 15 minutes to read a book, play a game, or just talk with your child. When possible, consider a fun family night, where all members of your family can bond.

2 – Attend a School or Daycare Function

Due to hectic lives and busy schedules, most parents just drop off and pick up their children from school or daycare. A good New Year’s resolution is to attend a school or daycare function at least four times a year. Is your child’s kindergarten class putting on a small play during school? Try to request a few hours off work so that you can attend.

3 – Sort Your Kid’s Belongings

Whether you are the parent of a toddler or teenager, you likely have a lot of kids items accumulated in your home. You may have a collection of old toys, clothes, books, and movies. Sort through these items. If you intend to have more children, sort, box, label, and store. If you do not anticipate needing these things again, donate or sell on eBay.com, Cragslist.org, or host a yard sale.

4 – Take a Break

This may contradict the suggested New Year’s resolution of spending more time with your kids, but most mothers aren’t just moms, but super-moms. Those who aren’t parents and even dads are surprised to learn how much a mother does. So, be sure to take a break yourself. Whether it involves cuddling up with a new book once a month or monthly visits to the spa, do it. Make taking a break your New Year’s resolution.

5 – Ask for Help

As previously stated, many moms are super-moms because most do it all and then some. Yes, some will say it is a mother’s responsibility, but it also your responsibility to care for yourself. So, don’t be afraid to ask for help on occasion. In fact, make it your New Year’s resolution to do so. Ask your husband or live-in partner to watch the kids while you enjoy a day of shopping or pampering. Other alternatives include asking a close friend or family member or hiring a babysitter.

6 – Give Your Relationship Extra Attention

Most claim that romantic relationships slide down the importance scale once children are involved. Yes, your children should come first in every aspect of your life, but don’t let your personal relationship fail. For that reason, schedule monthly date nights, steal a few kisses, and so forth.

7 – Spend Time with Friends

In terms of spending time with friends, use your best judgment. You and your college friends may be in different places in your lives. Don’t want to spend an evening bar-hopping? Suggest lunch or coffee instead. If you must, take a step to develop new friendships with those who share similar interests. Start by joining community groups for parents.

8 – Learn to Let it Go

As a mother, you may want to make sure everything in your life is perfect. You want to make sure your kids are healthy, they get good grades, you make enough money, and that you have a clean house. Yes, these are all important aspects of raising a family, but learn to let the small things go. Too tired to do dishes? Don’t let a sink full of dishes bother you for just one night, do them in the morning.

The Safety Net of Home Security Systems

The Safety Net of Home Security Systems

Purchasing a GE home security system may be the best item one could purchase for home safety and protection. Of course, there will be those individuals who may feel that purchasing a GE home security system is based on a sense of paranoia. This is an absurd contention because the threat to self, family, and property is always a potential hazard no matter where one lives. In addition, if a person lives in an area that is somewhat remote (mountainous regions may be very densely populated, for example) Keep one thing in mind, criminals enjoy isolation because it makes detection difficult. Additionally, crimes that involve isolation such as home invasions are usually attractive to criminals who are psychotic and sociopathic.

A GE Home Security System as a Safety Net

Criminals have a tendency to “case out” their potential crime scenes. Yes, there are those criminals who rely on crimes of opportunity, (Crimes of opportunity are crimes that are not pre-planned or pre-meditated) but there are those criminals who elaborately plan their attacks. One of the areas that a criminal looks for is the ability to perform the crime without any chance of having any attention brought to them. If attention is brought to them in the form of an alarm or another form of GE home security system, they will be required to flee the scene or risk being apprehended. If they notice that a home is protected by a GE home security system, they may simply skip the home and head to another environment to commit their act.

The Durability of a GE Home Security System

Purchasing a security system should be a deliberate purchase. In other words, no customer should rush into purchasing a security system or an alarm. While there are many alarm and security systems on the market that are inexpensive and, in some cases, well designed it is still a smart idea to stick with a well-established company. General Electric (GE) has long since been in the business of producing consumer electronics and has an established track record of high-quality products. When it comes to a security system, it is of ABSOLUTE paramount importance to make sure the system will not falter. A GE home security system will not falter as it is produced by the best consumer electronics company on the market. In short, do not take risks with smaller, lesser-known companies for your security needs – stick with GE, instead.

Security Camera Surveillance

Security Camera Surveillance

Security camera surveillance is the way to go, wireless remote connection to a mobile device can in many ways be effective as a watchdog on the family home property.

Peepholes rarely serve any purpose because an unwanted intruder can make out that you are at home. They are entirely dysfunctional if you and other responsible people are away when potential danger presents itself. Security camera home surveillance systems provide quantum leaps in defense against various threats, apart from their invaluable roles in helping law and order agencies should break-ins occur.

Security Camera Surveillance

This implies that security camera home surveillance systems with reasonable recording capacities score over others which merely allow you to screen callers on real-time bases. However, all security camera home surveillance systems improve protection and privacy standards, regardless of their levels of sophistication and features.

Things to Consider When Choosing Between Security Camera Home Surveillance Systems

Convenience and marketing hype can burn big holes in your pocket, so unless you have especially deep ones, fight first reactions when you set out to make a selection from amongst the myriad security camera home surveillance systems that line up and compete for your custom. The wireless feature is a common source of dissatisfaction when purchase decisions regarding security camera home surveillance systems are taken in haste.

You might rue the extra expense when you discover the better reception that cables provide, especially when other electronic devices are in operation nearby. The range is another issue to bear in mind with wireless systems because concrete walls can play havoc with the distance you need to cover. Resolution and color are other extras which reduce overall value for money as far as many customers are concerned.

An Essential Check List to Aid All Selections of Security Camera Home Surveillance Systems

Realizing that some deluxe features of security camera home surveillance systems are not worthwhile, pale insignificance compared to the shock of learning that major investments in expensive equipment do not deliver the goods at all. What if camera angles are too narrow to cover all essential fields of view?

Is a focal length which makes faces unrecognizable of any use? What is the system does not work in ambient light conditions? Save the heartburn by putting all your technical requirements of security camera home surveillance systems to paper, and ticking each of them off specific product features on offer. The effort may appear to be a chore at first, but your hard work will pay off once you have your privacy and security needs in place, and when you are confident that you have invested in equipment which matches your home layout.

In many homes, there is a real or perceived need for home security cameras systems to capture any illegal activity as well as to provide visual notification of any impending intrusion. Many home security cameras systems can be designed to be as simple or as elaborate as needed, from one camera to several hundred, all integrated into a complex, yet easy to use and understand the system of video surveillance.

Many believe that elaborate camera systems are only for government or business use, but the reduction in prices of many components have made home security cameras systems more financially attractive to the residential market. The most newer systems utilize digital recording devices, capable of recording up to 30 days of activity before they automatically begin recording over the first part of the recording disk.

By using motions sensor cameras, they can record considerably more as nothing goes on the desk unless preceded by activity. This also helps in determining when an activity took place and finding its spot on the recording. The complexity of home security cameras systems may intimidate some homeowners, but for most, if they can use a home computer, they can figure out home security cameras systems.

Install System For Maximum Benefit

In most cases, unless the homeowner is well versed in electronic installations, professionals should be hired to install home security cameras systems. Hooking them through a network of multiplexers and feeding them into a recording device is not difficult, but if done wrong can take considerable time to disconnect and hook up correctly. Playback is the main concern when home security cameras systems and professional will never leave unless they can pick and choose a specific incident to watch, much as the homeowner will want to do in case of an incident.

Break-ins are not the only reason people have home security cameras systems installed. The use of video has also saved them from liability during incidents on their property in which injured persons may claim ownership liability for any injuries. By reviewing a recording of an incident, it may show the property owner is free of any responsibility for any accident.

home security cameras systems, if installed correctly can be a major deterrent to crime, offering little incentive to burglars to attempt access to the home. While the role being played by home security cameras systems may be in the prosecution of intruders, its primary goal is to help prevent their entry in the first place.

Identify Criminals

Identify Criminals

Identify Criminals

Thousands of criminals have been apprehended every year because of security cameras. Everyone from bank thieves to people who run red lights has been identified and arrested on video evidence. Homeowners can have this valuable security tool as well by installing a home security camera system on their property. Just like in the movies, thieves, vandals, and other lawbreakers can be identified from recorded video feed if a homeowner has one of these camera systems.

Identify Criminals

Components of a Good System

The first objective of a home security camera system is to obtain evidence of every crime that occurs on a property. While a security alarm system will alert anyone in the house and emergency services to anyone breaking in, a camera system will be able to prove who committed the crime. With that objective in mind, a camera system cannot operate with a source of electricity. If the power goes out, all of the components in a home security camera system will want a battery backup power supply so that they may continue to function.

A good system also uses a DVR (digital video recorder) box to record video feed to a DVD or hard drive. Weeks of a video feed can be recorded without user interaction, and a simple user interface allows the owner to call up any recorded video feed within seconds. The recording is automatic, and some DVR boxes will begin recording over the oldest video feed once its data capacity has been reached. The only drawback to a digital recorder is that once the data has been erased, in most cases it cannot be retrieved. However, the likelihood that a crime will occur without the owner knowing is minimal, and a user of a home security camera system can always turn off the feature that records over the past video feed.

Wireless and Wired Camera Systems

In the past, a home security camera system was always wired. Now, wireless cameras have become popular due to their ease of installation and maintenance. A person only has to hook them up to a power supply and configure the signal to send a video feed to the recorder. Wired cameras need a direct cable to the recorder, requiring more work to install but having a much stronger video feed signal. Other wireless devices such as cordless phones, remotes, and wireless networks may interfere with wireless camera video feeds, causing distortion to image quality or preventing the signal from reaching the recorder at all. When installing a wireless system, a user should check the image quality of the video feed to verify that the signal is strong and not interfering with other wireless devices.

With a home security camera system, homeowners can rest assured that anyone who breaks into their home or commits a crime on their property will be identified and arrested by the police.

Home Security 2017

Home Security 2017

Home security 2017 article post is a reminder to those readers that have not updated their home security system for a long time. It often happens just like, out of sight, out of mind, and then it is just a matter of time when the security system is compromised.

Is your mind full of questions about DIY home security, which you do not know whom to ask? Welcome to a list of common information needs on this vital subject, and to answers which bear repetition no matter if you have heard similar things before!

Home Security 2017

Is There a Top Diy Home Security Brand to Trust?

There are quite a few. Any manufacturer that complies with local regulations, and which has a reliable support service, should serve your purpose. Word of mouth promotion counts for a great deal in the field, and it is a capital idea to consult neighbors about their experiences with existing installations. Many international manufacturers have broad product ranges to suit most needs. Finally, your home insurance provider may want to make some binding recommendations in this matter.

Should I Worry About Hacking With Diy Home Security?

Any wireless system is subject in theory to interference. However, such intervention requires a level of sophistication which should be beyond reach for most petty criminals. However, what is more, likely is for pranksters to break into computer systems which are designed to alert the police and emergency service providers. You should subscribe to a software protection service which offers regular updates, and change passwords periodically if your hardware is linked to computer systems.

Should I Go Wireless with My Diy Home Security?

Cables will provide better reception and will be cheaper as well, as long as you are in the same or reasonably connected premises, to the one you need to watch. A wireless system which really sets you free in terms of range, and which can traverse buildings and structures, will be expensive and not entirely secure from snoopers. Further, wireless surveillance may not meet all local regulations in some areas. Overall, cables are better if you have the time and energy to pin them in place.

How About Used Diy Home Security Stuff?

A substantial discount for a durable model being disposed of by a known and reliable person is always worth considering. Availability and transfer of warranties and maintenance contracts are other key considerations. It would be hard to find reasons to dismantle a working system in a home which changes hands. A used system for a new home, on the other hand, is difficult to justify, given the effects of various layout differences. Slightly defaced or damaged goods, certified by the manufacturer, are most often dream bargains, as they are as good as new in performance terms.
Is All Diy Home Security Electronic?

Far from it! Guard dogs, deterrent sprays, and training in physical confrontation and defense, enhance protection, though the term ‘diy home security’ is generally taken to mean equipment such as sensors, alarms, and cameras. Security should be as broad-based as you can make it, and must include all the contingency facilities that you can muster. Adverse events may isolate your home for some time, so emergency rations, cash, lights, linen, and medicines, are all part of keeping your family and you safe as far as possible.

How Can I Learn More About Diy Home Security?

Subscribe to web sites, forums, and print media. Keep abreast of new developments, and exchange notes with others. Keep in touch with local law and order authorities: remain vigilant without making an obsession out of safety!

Vitamin E as a Supplement to Fight Aging

Vitamin E as a Supplement to Fight Aging

Are you looking for a solution to fight the aging process? Vitamin E supplements have long been used to keep people feeling and looking younger. Vitamin E is the number one supplement that is universally accepted to fight aging above all other antioxidants. In fact, the anti-aging properties of Vitamin E supplements have become legendary among researchers worldwide. The claims of success with Vitamin E supplements to fight aging have become so strong, that some medical professionals feel that Vitamin E is the most important supplement consumers should take to fight the aging process.

But what makes Vitamin E supplements so powerful? Vitamin E supplements fight the gradual clogging and hardening of the arteries, technically known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis occurs mainly because bad-type LDL blood cholesterol is chemically altered by attacks from free radicals in the blood stream. This chemical alteration, or oxidation, makes this cholesterol able to enter the artery walls, where it becomes plaque. This plaque then builds up on the artery walls and eventually clogs and hardens the arteries. Vitamin E enters the LDL cholesterol molecule and prohibits it from oxidizing, thus preventing heart disease in older adults.

Vitamin E supplements also rejuvenate the immune system. A university study on aging proves this point. A group of people over the age of sixty with poor immune systems were given Vitamin E for thirty days. The results were that their immune systems shot back up to almost the level of people in their twenties. This was an improvement of almost 80-90%. It is believed that this works because Vitamin E as a supplement helps guard the fat in the membranes of immune cells from being oxidized by free radial attacks. It must be noted that because the people in the study were not deficient in Vitamin E, it was the extra dose of Vitamin E from the supplements that caused the improvement in the test subject’s immune systems.

Because it stops the free radical chain reaction that destroys cells, Vitamin E supplements fight a lot of other illnesses caused by aging as well. Vitamin E also prevents cancer and blocks the growth of cancer cells and protects the brain from degenerative diseases. It relieves arthritis symptoms; fight cataracts, and helps with decreased blood flow to the arteries. Incredibly, Vitamin E supplements are almost a one-stop shop when it comes to fighting the aging process in the human body. Vitamin E can also be applied topically to the skin as well. Vitamin E creams and lotions have all kinds of healing and anti-aging properties to reduce the look of aging.

If you are suffering from any ailments caused by free radicals that are destroying healthy cells in your body, Vitamin E supplements may help stop this process. Studies show that as little as 100 IU’s of Vitamin E daily, in addition to the Vitamin E that you get from food can produce measurable results. However, in order to see real benefits, the daily dosage should be at least 400 IU’s on a daily basis. This seems to be the agreed upon amount of Vitamin E needed to effectively tackle the free radicals that may be destroying healthy cells. Studies further show that it appears safe to take up to 800 IU’s of Vitamin E a day for this purpose. However, like any alternative medication, it is important to check with a doctor before you take any dosage of Vitamin E to fight free radicals in your bloodstream to fight aging.

Vitamin E is an important fat-soluble antioxidant compound that aids the body in neutralizing the harmful after-effects of oxidation of fats.
Spinach may not be your favorite veggie, but it is one of the best leafy greens you can add to your diet. Not only is it one of the best calcium foods and naturally high in folate, it’s also one of the best vitamin E foods as well. Just one cup of boiled spinach will provide you with approximately 20% of your daily needs.

Using Vitamin B as a Supplement

Using Vitamin B as a Supplement

There are two B vitamins in particular that can prevent illnesses and help you lead a healthier life. These are vitamin B12 and vitamin B6. While many people are aware of the positive benefits of vitamins C and E, less people know about the strength of these two B vitamins. However, the amazing thing about these two B vitamins is that they are now being proven to help specifically prevent deterioration of both your brain and your immune system. So vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 are definitely two supplements that will compliment the other vitamins you may be taking.

Using Vitamin B as a Supplement

Using Vitamin B as a supplement explained

This is especially true when it comes to brain function. As you age, your stomach progressively secretes fewer acids that are necessary to absorb vitamin B12 from food into your system. A vitamin B12 deficiency can develop over the years and may start affecting the brain and the nervous system. If this occurs, dementia and other psychiatric disorders are likely to be the result. Since recent studies have shown that at least 20% of people over 60 are not getting enough B12, this may be cause for concern to older people. The sooner a B12 deficiency is detected, the better. Delaying treatment for even a year can mean permanent damage if neurological symptoms show up.

Using Vitamin B as a supplements as you grow older

Vitamin B12 supplements are important to take because even with less stomach acid, the crystalline form of vitamin B12 can still be absorbed into the system at a regular rate. Since vitamin B12 deficiencies can start as early as 30, there’s no reason not to take a B12 supplement or a multivitamin if you aren’t eating healthy. As far as foods go, Vitamin B12 can only be found in animal foods such as meat, chicken, fish, and dairy products. So vegetarians should be especially aware of their vitamin B12 intake and learn more about the benefits of these supplements.

Unlike B12, vitamin B6 is stronger on the immune system. Vitamin B6 is good for raising the levels of T-cells, T-helper cells, and antibodies: all disease fighting substances of the immune system. Incredibly though, a lack of vitamin B6 intake is even more widespread than B12. Americans actually take in 50-75% less than the recommended dietary allowance of B6, which can lower the production of antibodies necessary for the immune system to function properly. Even more alarming is that as people near age forty, the body begins to absorb vitamin B6 less efficiently, further lowering levels of B6.

If you don’t get enough B6, you may be more vulnerable to other medical conditions as well. Besides a failing immune system, you may also suffer form a declining mental status, compromised heart health, and maybe even cancer. Vitamin B6 supplements can help fight against enzymes that can destroy blood vessels. Vitamin B6 supplements have also been proven to improve long term memory and slow down age-related memory decline.

Thankfully, the right amount of vitamins B12 and B6 are found in a standard multivitamin. If you are under 40, typically this dosage should correct any vitamin B deficiencies. There’s no guarantee, but 6 micrograms of B12 and 3 milligrams of Vitamin B6 should be enough to correct any vitamin B deficiency. If you are over 40 and suffering a deficiency, a higher dosage is recommended. There is no danger in high doses when taking B vitamins; however, when taking any supplement for medical reasons, you should always consult a doctor.

With vitamin B6 and B12 so easy to get in a multivitamin, it is one of the supplements that you don’t have to worry about taking. This makes vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 two of the most helpful and accessible supplements on the market today.

Tips for Using Vitamins and Supplements

Tips for Using Vitamins and Supplements

When you take prescribed medication, it comes with a warning label and usually an entire pamphlet explaining how to use the medication. It also comes with the advice of a doctor and a pharmacist; two medical professionals who are at your disposal if you need them. This is, however, not the case for vitamins and supplements. With vitamins, all you get in the way of directions is usually the dosage suggestion on the bottle. This can be somewhat disconcerting, especially when you consider that you are taking vitamins and supplements for health reasons. So, here are a few tips on using vitamins and supplements that you won’t find on the warning label of your vitamin bottle.

Tips for Using Vitamins and Supplements

Tips for using vitamins and supplements 1.

Always take vitamins with some kind of food.

Vitamins are not a meal substitute, they are a meal supplement. If you take vitamins or supplements on an empty stomach, they will simply wash right out of your system. Also, don’t take vitamins with fresh fruit for breakfast. The citrus acids in the fruit can change the chemical makeup of the vitamin and strip away its nutritive values.

Tips for using vitamins and supplements 2.

Always take vitamins and supplements with water.

While it seems healthier to take them with fruit juice, all you are doing is subjecting your vitamins to a bath of citric acid, thereby stripping them of their nutrients. Also, do not take vitamins and supplements with caffeine. The caffeine will leach the nutrients out of the vitamins and they will simply flush out of your system.

Tips for using vitamins and supplements 3.

If you miss taking your vitamins during the day, let it go.

Do not try to take the vitamins you forgot during the day before bedtime. Doing this may keep you awake all night. Also, don’t try to “make up” for the vitamins you missed the day before. Taking too many vitamins or higher dosages will not be beneficial. In fact, it may make you sick.

Tips for using vitamins and supplements 4.

If you are taking a sports enhancement supplement, make sure that you take it as directed.

Some sports supplements need to be taken before or after a workout in order to be effective.

Tips for using vitamins and supplements 5.

Make sure that you are not taking vitamins that conflict with each other.

When taking several different vitamins at the same time, they can actually cancel each other out; making both of them null and void. For example, taking too much extra zinc can zap the positive effects of any copper you might be taking.

Tips for using vitamins and supplements 6.

Make sure you store your vitamins properly.

Keep them out of direct sunlight and fluorescent lighting. Too much exposure to sunlight depletes the vitamins of their nutrients, making them ineffective. Also, store supplements at the right temperature. Vitamins that have been exposed to too much heat and cold also lose their potency. Check the label. If the temperature of your refrigerator is right to store the supplements you have, then this is the best place to store them.

Tips for using vitamins and supplements 7.

Never mix vitamins together in the same bottle.

They can merge into each other, possibly forming unknown substances.

Tips for using vitamins and supplements 8.

Always check the expiration date.

Vitamins and supplements have a long shelf life, but once that is over, throw them out.

9. Don’t take large doses of any vitamin thinking that it will have more of an effect.

In some cases, people will take large doses of vitamin C, B-complex, and E for serious illnesses, but this should be done under the care of a doctor. Don’t try to experiment on your own to cure a serious illness with vitamins and supplements. Also, vitamins in large doses can be poisonous and even fatal.

10. Don’t use vitamins as a substitute for taking medication or going to the doctor.

Vitamin and supplements are incredible healers and prevent many illnesses; but if you have a serious medical condition, you should always try to get to a doctor first. The medical miracles that you hear about concerning vitamins and supplements are true in some cases, but like the labels say, “results may vary.” Don’t assume that your medical condition is like anyone else’s or that it can be solved by taking vitamins and supplements alone.

Remember vitamins are most helpful for preventing illness and maintaining overall health, but they are not a cure-all. A sensible diet, moderate exercise, and routine checkups are still strongly recommended to achieve maximum health.

The Myths about Vitamins and Supplements

The Myths about Vitamins and Supplements

When it comes to vitamins and supplements, there is so much misinformation out there that it is hard to know what to believe about them. There are many false claims from manufacturers, self-proclaimed health gurus with misleading information, and all of the sorts of well-meaning people who simply don’t know what they are talking about. Combined with the desire for people’s need to believe that vitamins and supplements will perform miracles for them, many myths and misunderstandings have developed surrounding vitamins and supplements.

Myth #1: Vitamins and supplements cure disease.

Facts: Vitamins and supplements can help prevent disease, help cure disease, and help lessen the effects of disease; but vitamins and supplements alone cannot cure disease. No one who is seriously ill should ever take vitamins in place of prescribed medication or medical care. The main benefit of vitamins and supplements is their preventative nature. For example, if you have a history of cancer in your family, you might want to take beta carotene to prevent the disease before you have any signs of it.

Myth#2: Vitamins and supplements are not medication.

Facts: While there are many people who take vitamins and supplements seriously, there are others who take them like candy, and don’t feel like they have any major effect. The truth here lies somewhere in the middle. While technically vitamins and supplements are not medication, when taken in the right doses, they can take on the same qualities. Studies that researchers conduct with higher doses of vitamins and supplements show that these kinds of doses can have almost the same effect as real medication. Taken literally, they can interfere with other medications and have serious side effects. So, while technically vitamins are not medicine, they should be taken like they are.

Myth#3: You can’t take too many vitamins and supplements.

Facts: This is completely false. There are several vitamins and supplements that can be deadly when taken in high doses or for too long a period of time. Vitamins A and D, niacin, and iron can all have adverse effects, resulting in liver damage, heart disease, loss of nerve function, and increased risk of cancer. Other supplemental overdoses can cause milder medical problems like diarrhea, stomach pain, and sleeplessness. Taken together in large doses, some vitamins will also cancel each other out. For example, too much extra zinc can zap the effects of any copper you might be taking.

Myth#4: Vitamins are all the same.

Facts: Just because a substance is labeled “Vitamin C” doesn’t mean that it will have the same potency as every other “Vitamin C” on the shelf. For example, researchers have questioned whether synthetic vitamin C is as effective as vitamin C produced from rosehips or other natural substances. Vitamins come in so many different forms and from so many different sources that it is important to read the label and also to be an educated shopper. This way, you will get the vitamins you need in the right form and potency.

Myth#5: Everything on the label is true.

Facts: The only thing that is true about any vitamin or supplement is what you read from independent studies or literature. Many manufacturers make claims based on research or information that is not accurate in order to make sales. If the label on a vitamin or a supplement makes claims that don’t sound believable, then they probably aren’t. Many of these claims are made so that the price can be jacked way up in order for the manufacturer to make a big profit. Save your money. Just because a supplement costs twice as much as the others, doesn’t mean that it will work better.

Myth#6: Vitamins and Supplements can replace healthy eating.

Facts: You can’t live on junk food and take a daily supplement and think that it will do anything. If you eat nothing but junk food and take a multivitamin every day, the only thing that it will do for you makes you feel less guilty about your bad eating habits. Supplements are just what they say they are: supplementary to healthy eating. They are definitely not a replacement for it.

Overdosing on Vitamins and Supplements

Overdosing on Vitamins and Supplements

People who have experienced the positive effects of vitamins and supplements sometimes get carried away and think that if a low dose works okay, then a higher dose will work much better. In some cases, this is true, like if you are trying to prevent a cold by taking extra vitamin C. However in some cases this is not true. In fact, taking high doses of some vitamins can make someone ill or even cause death. That is why it is very important to make sure that the vitamins and supplements you are taking do not build up in your system to become a lethal dose.

Lingonberry is the most used harvested berry in Finland.

One of the most harmful supplements to take too much of is iron. This is especially true for many older people who fear that their blood is iron-poor and will begin taking supplements to make sure that they are getting enough iron so that they don’t become anemic. This is the worst thing that they can do.

Excess iron can be very dangerous because it helps free radicals to damage cells. For example, excess iron can change benign LDL cholesterol into the toxic type that wrecks the arteries and causes heart failure. Studies have shown that men with the highest amount of iron in their blood were twice as likely to have heart attacks. Other studies have shown that eating too much meat with iron in it will speed up the process of getting heart disease.

Because excess iron speeds of the creation of free radicals, it has been implicated as a carcinogen as well. Cancer patients who have been studied for higher levels of iron in their blood have been found to have a greater risk for cancer, especially those who ate a diet high in red meat. Those who ate about five ounces of iron-rich meat a day were 250 percent more like to develop colon cancer than those who did not.

There are several other vitamins and supplements that can be deadly when taken in high doses or for too long a period of time. Vitamins A and D, and niacin can all have adverse effects, resulting in liver damage, heart disease, loss of nerve function, and increased risk of cancer. Overdoses of other supplements can cause milder medical problems like diarrhea, stomach pain, and sleeplessness. Large doses of niacin should not be taken by those who are pregnant or suffering from gout, peptic ulcers, glaucoma, liver disease, or diabetes.

Vitamin A should not be taken in large amounts in pill form or as cod liver oil by those suffering from liver disease. Pregnant women should avoid amounts of vitamin A over 25,000 IU. Children who are going to be taking vitamin A for more than one month should not take over 18,000 IU. If you are on any medication, check with your doctor before taking vitamin A as a supplement, as it can interfere with some medications.

These are only a few of the situations where taking too many vitamins and supplements can turn deadly. If you are going to take a vitamin or supplement other than a multivitamin for a special reason, make sure to read up about it before you start a vitamin regimen. You may find that taking a combination of vitamins can be harmful, or that what higher doses you want to take may not be necessary. At any rate, it is always best to stick with a premeasured multivitamin if you don’t feel like you have enough information to successfully treat an illness with supplements.
